Policy & Outreach

The Yale Center for Green Chemistry and Green Engineering engages in policy, communication, and outreach initiatives that raise awareness of - and support for - GC&E. In this dialogue the Center engages with a wide network of stakeholders, including NGOs, industry, academia, and government, as well as local communities and the general public.

To achieve real progress towards a truly sustainable society, it is imperative that there is an increased awareness of the inherent potential in Green Chemistry and Green Engineering. The Yale Center, in cooperation with its partners, communicates the benefits of GC&E to the scientific and industrial communities as well as to decision-makers in the public sector.

Through interdisciplinary seminars and symposia, trade and general press information, and emerging multimedia communications venues, the Yale Center conveys the importance of Green Chemistry and Green Engineering to a broad audience.

On-going Activities:

Understanding the barriers to implementing Green Chemistry in the United States chemical enterprise

The challenge of promoting greater adoption of green chemistry innovations is substantial because green chemistry is a disruptive emerging technology embedded in a complex scientific, political, regulatory, economic, industrial and cultural framework. Innovations in green chemistry are innovations in a large system that spans borders between nations, between industries, and between scientific disciplines. This Center is focusing on the following questions: What are the barriers that slow or prevent the implementation of green chemistry? In particular, which of these barriers are the most particular to the chemical industry, as opposed to the more general problems associated with implementing technical innovations in well established industries?
